For those of you who want to install custom ROM on your Galaxy Note 3 with a locked bootloader, now you can use SafeStrap recovery by XDA user HashCode to do so.

This is a custom recovery that works around the locked bootloader so you can install custom ROMs, very similar to TWRP but slightly different.

Currently, only Verizon Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900V is supported but AT&T Note 3 SM-N900A should be supported in the upcoming weeks (my guess is around next week) but the instructions should be same for both.

THIS IS ONLY FOR VERIZON OR AT&T NOTE 3, DO NOT FOLLOW UNLESS YOU HAVE A NOTE 3 WITH LOCKED BOOTLOADER!!!

Before we begin, download a custom ROM you want to install on your Note 3.  For this example, I have downloaded JellyBeans ROM (which I highly recommend btw) to install on my Verizon Note 3.

Your Note 3 MUST BE ROOTED!!!  See How to Root Galaxy Note 3 if you haven’t rooted your Note 3 yet.

Step 1. Download the latest version of SafeStrap apk file for your model of Note 3 from here:

Download SafeStrap APK file for Verizon Note 3 SM-N900V

Download SafeStrap APK file for AT&T Note 3 SM-N900A

What the latest on att version?

  4. tiredofwaiting says:

So last week has come and gone yet still no recovery for att n900a. All I really want tot know is..is the hold up on custom recovery trying to keep warranty in tact? If so screw it, I’d gladly give up my warranty to have to availability of restore and flashing backups. Especially since with 99% of problems a restore will fix the issue, for everything but hardware malfunction. I don’t understand how it could take this long when a nearly identical bootloader came on note 2 4.3 leak and Seanz broke that boot in like an hour, while also disabling selinux. So please pretty please void my warranty just give me freaking recovery, this wait is insane.

    Thanks

Max. You should look into kingo root method for android. Very easy and it works. I have at&t note 3 and I rooted my phone with your method , but somehow at&t push there update on my phone . Took away my root and put me on the latest update. Found kingo root and it work and I install safe strap and it also work and I’m now running a custom rom on at&t note 3 name Knoxraid 1.1 v… rom.

  11. thewiz says:

At&t galaxy note 3 just install x-note rom port from sm-n9005. Max you have to check this ROM. Remember if you updated your at&t note 3 you can still root using the kingo root method. Its easy and you don’t have to do nothing. Takes maybe 15 minutes.

How exactly do I delete a rom slot? Im using hyperdrive rls12 and i want to flash rls14. The rom slot Im using isnt big enough and I want to create a new one with more space first and then flash rls14

You should really start posting some AT&T roms since we’re so late to the game.

  14. Kevin says:

I have installed Safestrap from the link and installed the recovery with success. On reboot i get a black screen and then normal rooted custom load screen with no safestrap option. I have tried re installing safestrap and get the same issue. I am rooted (verified) using verizon Note 3 with JB. Any suggestions? Thanks

    • SM says:

I am running into the same issue from a Verizon Note 3 4.4.2. I’ve tried SafeStrap 3.65 and 3.71 from the main webpage, but I come across the same issue you are having. KNOX was successfully removed per superuser. So I am not sure what else I am doing wrong! Did you ever resolve the issue on your end>

      • Will says:

You need to use Safestrap 3.75. Click Install Recovery and make sure that it says Installed above the Install option. If it still says uninstalled, more than likely you haven;t downloaded and installed BusyBox. Once you’ve verified that it says Installed in Safestrap, click reboot to recovery and when the phone is rebooting and shows the Galaxy Note 3 page at start up, next should come the safestrap page, if not, try hitting the menu button a couple times to manually start up safestrap

        • SM says:

Yup Safestrap 3.75 worked to start up in recovery. What was missing was BusyBox and re-opening superuser prompted me that KNOX was still enabled. Not sure if all of those things needed to be addressed. So the issue is I really wanted to install Jasmine ROM. I downloaded V2.0 and installed it in ROM slot 1 with standard partitions made by SafeStrap. It installed and on reboot it just stayed blank. Power button, nothing worked. I had to take the battery out and on restart it allowed me to back into recovery. Tried numerous times, redownloaded, same thing. Tried Hyperdrive ROM, again same deal. Installs, says complete, reboots. Gives me then option to go into recovery or continue. Whether I leave that screen be or hit continue its just darkness from there. No responses unless I take my battery out.

What am I doing wrong?? Please help!

          • BJ says:

I’m running into the same situation. Verizon Note3 (N900V) rooted with towelroot. Used Safestrap (with Busybox, who knew!) to create partition and installed Jelly Beans, but when I reboot I get nothing after the Safestrap screen. Just darkness and no response. Have to remove the battery to restart.

Would love to hear what I’m doing wrong and what to do to fix it.

            • MB says:

I’m running into the same problem. I have safestrap 3.72 and busybox pro installed on build NC4, KK 4.4.2 on SM-N900V (VZW GN3). HD installs fine on Slot-1. I get to safestrap screen after reboot, and afterwards, nothingness… blank… even after 30 minutes. I then have to take out the battery and reboot into recovery. I’ve now tried this a dozen times. Even cleaned and deleted Slot 1, recreated slot 1, and installed HD RLS8. What gives? Everything else works superbly until just after reboot.

  15. zeeshan says:

    hi there.

i installed and rebooted in the recovery but when i touch the rom slot 1 and try to create the slot it just not highlight the create rom slot option and the remaining space after the the 5400 mb is only 1 mb how can i resolve that??

Thank you sir! Your video and step by step instructions are what I used to root my phone after much homework. It was easy! Like others, it hung up on the KNOX screen, but once taped the home button and reopened supersu it restarted and removed knox in a matter of seconds. THANK YOU!

Greetings! Just finished loading the S5 ROM onto my AT&T Note 3. My question is that in Settings>System>Storage, my total space is 32.00GB, System memory is 29.08GB and Available space is 1.62GB. Did I make a mistake in the data partition size (3GB)? Sandisk Memory zone is showing 20.2 of 26.0 GB Free. I’m confused, please help! Thanks.

    • Ameer Eilenfeldt says:

I have the exact same problem running hyperdrive 8 on safestrap rom slot 2. 29 GB of 32 GB tied up in inaccessible system memory. Keep getting reminders that my memory is low. My external card has 59 GB available.
Rom slot 1 with rooted 4.4.2 shows that I have 14 GB available. How do I free up that memory on rom slot 2.

    • Max Lee says:

Try using Stock ROM slot to install ROM, when you use ROM slots, you can only have so much internal storage of what you set to so I think that’s the problem.

Around step 4 in having issues. Verizon SM-N900V. When I reboot I get the normal screen with a padlock symbol but no option to get into the menu. I’m rooted, filed every step exactly but for whatever reason I can’t get to that screen.

    • Max Lee says:

Install Busybox app, install busybox, uninstall safestrap, reinstall safestrap, and reboot. Voila!

      • Ulysses says:

Hi Max – I’m having the same issue Max had but when I hit reboot to recovery after I installed recovery I got the screen with the padlock symbol but now I have a black screen and cant get it to turn on or do anything. I’ve rooted it by following your video and installed Titanium Backup before installing safestrap. I have a Verizon SM-N900V. Please, please help. Thanks.

  32. Daniel C. says:

Is it possible to do this having used the towelroot method? I’d installed busybox and everything, nothing seems to work to get into the recovery. I’m just getting the boot screen with the padlock and then it redoes that and boots regular. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Verizon 4.3

    • Max Lee says:

Try uninstalling safestrap and reinstall then u should be able to access safestrap from boot.

      • Daniel C. says:

That didn’t seem to work. I’m not sure what’s wrong.

        • Max Lee says:

Oh 4.3? That could be why, make sure you are using the correct version of SafeStrap. Read up on XDA forum it should tell you which one is the correct one for 4.3.

  33. JQ Liu says:

Hey… ATT Note 3 here, all was good until step 12. SafeStrap confirms rom finished installing, I clicked reboot, phone goes black, the “Note 3 (custom)” screen, then black again, clicks continue on the SafeStrap screen,
then the Screen just goes black and stays black forever. (I mean I left it for a good 2 hours)
also the notification LED gives a blue pulse indication.
Tried to reinstall the ROM multiple times even on other ROM slots, still no good.

  34. Brandyn Walker says:

  37. Ralph says:

Hey quick question i follow this tutorial but used your new S5 Rom port to Note 3 N900A everything works to the point great job on this and other one, but only one question why is it that when i go to storage its telling me my system it’s using 29.57GB leaving me with about 1.12GB Free. I am wondering if its because i still have my stock rom, if so can i just follow same steps and just get rid of stock rom and write only s5 rom would that take care of the Storage problem.

  38. shakavon says:

hey i need help every time i try to install jedi elit kk on my note 3 using safe strap 3.75 it frezzes when it gets down to loading aroma installer

  39. Diego Ramirez says:

Hi Max I appreciate all you help I’ve gotten on my devices. I was just womderin if you could compile a list of ROMs that are safestrap compatible. For the Verizon note 3 4.4.2. Thanks

    • Max Lee says:

Most TouchWiz ROMs are compatible and AOSP ROMs cannot be installed using SafeStrap. Also there is an issue with firmwares as some of the older ROMs based on older firmwares may not run correctly. But let me see what I can do to make things a bit easier.

  40. Will says:

I have my n900v device rooted and everything works properly. I have safestrap downloaded and my kernel is NC4. Since my kernel is NC4, I tried flashing Biggins from you site since it says it runs on NC4. But no matter what ROM I have tried to flash, every time it tries flashing, it says failed. Do you know anything I may need to do for this? I follow your steps to a tee, but when I get to the Install part, it fails every single time. Why is that?

    • Will says:

Here is what it says verbatim:

      Setting Permissions…
      set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
      E:Error executing updater binary in zip ‘?sdcard/Download/Hyperdrive RLS8 KK Note 3 VZW.zip’
      Error flashing zip ‘?sdcard/Download/Hyperdrive RLS8 KK Note 3 VZW.zip’
      Updating partition details…
      E:Unable to mount ‘/system’

That is when I try Hyperdrive from your site and it says the exact same thing but with Biggins obviously when I try Biggins. Please help

  41. kixfan says:

This may be a dumb question but I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere. I rooted my AT&T Note 3 as above. Everything went perfectly. Now I’m thinking about flashing Alliance Rom but I’m a bit scared. One of the steps wipes my phone completely. Will I be able to get my app data and game progress back? If so how do I do this? I have done a backup in Safestrap and also run Titanium Backup on my phone. Whats the procedure for restoring everything? Thank you for your help.

    • Will says:

If the game has you sign in with Facebook or Google+, then your save files will be stored in a cloud automatically and your progress should resume as normal once you Flash the ROM and sign into your account again. Although some games are weird and don’t do that. You can also use an app called DataSync to send your save files to another Android device. I personally would suggest doing that and then flashing the ROM you want and then use DataSync to send it back to your phone. Max might know of a more efficient way of doing this though, in which case, I am eager to learn as well since I hate restarting. I don’t get why all games don’t just save it to your Google+ or Facebook accounts so you can access them on many devices

  42. kixfan says:

When trying to flash a rom I keep getting Failed: unable to open zip file error.

  43. kixfan says:

Am I doing the wipe part right? I select wipe and swipe the bottom to factory reset or am I supposed to format data?

    • kixfan says:

I got it to work. I ended up having to download the ROM on my PC and drag it to the SD Card. Apparently the copy I downloaded with my phone got corrupted somehow. Thanks for the help!

  44. krysstofer says:

Is there a safestrap 3.75 for att? Im trying the 3.72 version andit doesnt show installed up top but on bottom it flashes was installed

    • Will says:

You need to use 3.75 from the links on this site. And the reason it isn’t actually installing is because you need to go to the play store and download busybox and install it. Installing the app, doesn’t install the program so make sure to open it and click install.

      • krysstofer says:

The 3.75 is for Verizon. I have att. And I have both busy box and busy box high rail on my phone and installed.

        • krysstofer says:

Thanks. It worked but now I’m black screening. After I install cm 11 rc or hyperdrive I hit reboot and it sits at the black screen any idea what I’m doing wrong. I’m rooted and running safe strap 3.75 on my att

  45. Thomas says:

I have followed your tutorial on how to install Safestrap and the same jellybean rom that you loaded in your video. I am on a Verizon Note 3 with NC4. After I install the rom into slot 1 and reboot. I press continue and get nothing but a black screen. It did not load the Jelly Beans Rom like you did. I have not flashed any kernels or anything else as so far, I have been able to follow your instructions successfully up until now. Any help on this would be great. Also, I do not have a Windows computer. Please help me get to a custom Rom.

    Hello everyone,
My Note 3 is with AT&T, KitKat 4.4.2
I understand that my first step is to go to towelroot website to root my phone, then SUPER SU & TITANIUM BACK UP.
After that, follow the steps with SAFESTRAP.

My question is will I be able to install Download Dynamic Kat Xtreme ROM after doing all this because I read the following in the instructions above

“Currently, only Verizon Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900V is supported but AT&T Note 3 SM-N900A should be supported in the upcoming weeks (my guess is around next week) but the instructions should be same for both.”

  48. ray says:

okay i have acouple of question im on the verizon note 3 4.4.2 nc4 and you said when you get ready to flash a new rom you gotta use the kenal nc2 i did that all my phone does is get stuck on the verzion logo

    • Will says:

You don’t flash in the nc2 kernel until you are installing the Rom you are flashing. Your stock OS will not work with the nc2 kernel. Flash in the nc4 kernel to get your stock OS working again and download the Rom you want to your SD card and then flash in the nc2 kernel and reboot to safestrap and install your new Rom

Isn’t it odd that Safestrap version 3.75 which this guide lists is not even listed on the developers download list?
    Check it out: http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/downloads/safestrap/

Maybe that’s what is causing all the problems of the black screen after trying to install a rom.

The website lists version 3.65 for Galaxy Note 3 (VZW) [HLTEVZW] 2013-11-14 v3.65
Should we downgrade to Safestrap 3.65?

    Hey Maxx and everyone else!
I just rooted my 900A from AT&T and I love how it’s super fast now! But I’m trying to install custom roms now and it will not boot into recovery. I’ve tried uninstalling and re-installing both the Busybox and Safestrap apps to no avail…It says it’s installed and that I have root with superuser app but just keeps loading into the regular system. And I sometimes have to force it to even do that.

I did these AFTER “TowelRoot” + SuperSU (and BTW SuperSU had to run twice to clear KNOX after the first time it just hung.

Safestrap (v3.75) installs and I get the screen (step 4) :
    — start —
    Reboot your Note 3.
During boot, you will see a SafeStrap screen which gives you an option to “RECOVERY” or “CONTINUE”. Chose “RECOVERY” to boot into SafeStrap recovery.
    — end —
I do chose “Reboot to Recovery” But the phone just reboots.
I *do* see a slightly different screen upon power-up now: an unlocked lock, then the normal Note 3 screen comes up and the Verizon screen and the phone just boots normally to the lock screen.

    Any ideas?
    Thx!
    Note 3 (4.4.2 + NC4)

Did you open the safestrap app itself and install recovery? If so open it and verify it says recovery installed at the top.

        Howdy, folks!

        To recap my Verizon Note 3 details: SM-N900V / Android 4.4.2 / Kernel 3.4.0-1487472 / build version NC4 / bootloader NC4 / Knox = 0x0 / Build date 4/28/14.

Device is rooted (via TowelRoot and confirmed with Titanium Backup). Safestrap 3.75 is “Installed”. BusyBox 1.232 is installed.

As I understand it, in order to save or install ROMs I *must* use SafeStrap. Is this so?

When I run SafeStrap the screen shows “State: Installed” and “Safe System: Not Active”.
Tapping “Reboot to Recovery” does reboot the phone but I do NOT get any options to save or install any ROMs. The phone just reboots.

I thought I read somewhere I may need to (somehow) roll back to NC2…

        Any ideas, folks?
        Thanks!

Go to xda site and search for nc2 kernel. Run that and it will enable safestrap to run.

  72. Allen says:

Safestrap was fantastic for this process but the original developer has stopped development and moved onto other things. Therefore Safestrap works on 4.4.2, but once to 4.4.4 it is no longer supported. Any recommendation for a similar alternative for a rooted Note 3 (900A) on 4.4.4?

I’m running lollipop 5.0 and can tell you that safestrap still works. I use it on my phone still. Read my above post! Go find the thread on xda.
